The Tipton Family Association of America October 8th, 2016 Meeting

Enthusiastic group of Tiptons and Tipton descendants at Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site

Pictured is the enthusiastic group of Tiptons and Tipton descendants from 14 states and Washington DC gathered to enjoy the day of programs and information about TFAA events and projects. The days programs included a visit from Colonel John Tipton (1730-1813), pictured on the far right, and a presentation The History of the Battle of the Lost State of Franklin by Judge David Tipton from Piney Flats, Tennessee.

In addition, the group introduced themselves and their Tipton line of descent so they could identify others in their line, become better acquainted and share mutual family history.

Welcome to Spring

The USS Tipton

This Alamosa Class ship was named for the Tipton Counties in Indiana and Tennessee. It was built in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and launched 9 October 1945. US Navy Lt. Commander H. E. Gray was the ship’s first captain. At the end of World War II, the USS Tipton was transferred to the United States Coast Guard.

But, before we leave 2015 entirely, let’s take note of some developments since our October meeting in Savannah.

1st: A donor wishing to remain anonymous has funded the project to place an historic marker honoring the Tipton Family on the grounds of the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton in the area of existing historic markers noting other early settler families on the Watauga River. The fund has begun with a contribution of $ 250.00!

William “Fighin’ Billy” Tipton

William “Fighin’ Billy” Tipton (1761-1849) was honored for his participation in the 1779 Battle of Savannah. The memorial ceremony took place at dawn at the battle site on Friday, October 9th, 2015, the 236th anniversary of the battle. The ceremony was presented by the Coastal Heritage Society of Georgia, Scott Smith, Director, and is held each year.

are in the vanguard of the attack!

Join the Tipton Family Association of America in Savannah, Georgia on October 9th, 2015 to commemorate the 236th anniversary of the battle in which William “Fightin’ Billy” Tipton was courageously at the forefront of the attack and received wounds he would endure for his lifetime.

During the commemoration ceremonies, a memorial will be placed on the battlefield to honor “Fightin’ Billy” Tipton (1761-1849).

The 2015 Tipton Family Association of America meeting will be held in Savannah on October 10th at the Quality Inn Midtown, 7100 Abercorn. The hotel is located five miles from the historic district on the Savannah River. The meeting will begin with Registration at 8:30am. Details for the schedule and programs will be published in a late summer newsletter.

In Memory of the late Robert Tipton Nave

Milligan College is located about halfway between Johnson City and Elizabethton in Carter County.

Great news for the TFAA and the Tipton family. The Association has accomplished another of its goals!

Several years ago, the membership established a fund in the TFAA to receive donations for a memorial stone at Battlefield Memorial Park in Savannah, Georgia. Battlefield Memorial Park commemorates the Siege of Savannah which took place on 9th October 1779 during the Revolutionary War. At the time, the British occupied Savannah and the Colonial Army attacked the British to regain control of the town and port of Savannah. The siege failed with heavy loss to the Continentals.
